So Dutch stroopwafels… these things are my vice, my little piece of heaven, they are so good when you set them on your coffee cup and then let the coffee warm them.
I was so excited when I saw these! Being Dutch, it is one of those little pleasures that one tends to miss, because well, I no longer live in The Netherlands; I live in Virginia!
I have found the real original stroopwafels before at Trader Joe’s and Wegmans, especially around the holidays. I was ecstatic to see the above Dutch Stroopwafels at my local Food lion.
Let me tell you, I was so disappointed! These are not stroopwafels! These are Americanized, chewy, caramel cookies… not a stroopwafel.

True Dutch stroopwafels are crispier, and the caramel is not soft like ice cream topping, but caramel is firm, more like toffee. They have a bit of crunch to them when you bite into them. Furthermore, these are the fattest looking “stroopwafels” I have ever seen. Both the flavor and the texture of this cookie is nothing like my original Dutch beloved stroopwafel.
Conclusion: This cookie needs to go on a serious diet, it needs to be crispier, and tougher…the Dutch do not like wimpy cookies.
P.S. I may just take on the challenge in an attempt to recreate the actual stroopwafels .. stay tuned…
@3bros mom, keep trying… or perhaps just stick to pecan cookies….
